Millstone is a small borough located in Somerset County, New Jersey, approximately 45 miles southwest of New York City. Despite its small size - with a population of just over 400 as of the 2020 census - Millstone has a long and storied history that dates back to the late 17th century.

The area that is now Millstone was first settled by European colonists in the 1680s, and the town itself was officially incorporated in 1894. Its name derives from the grist mills that once operated along the Millstone River, which runs through the center of the borough. These mills played a crucial role in the early economy and development of Millstone.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Millstone maintained its character as a quiet, rural farming community. However, in more recent decades, the borough has seen increasing residential and commercial development, while still preserving much of its historic small-town charm. Many of Millstone's original 18th and 19th century buildings, including several churches and homes, still stand today.

One of Millstone's most famous landmarks is the Millstone River Bridge, a historic stone arched bridge that was built in 1843 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The borough is also home to several other historic sites and museums that celebrate its colonial and 19th century heritage.

Despite its growth, Millstone has managed to maintain a strong sense of community and local pride. Residents enjoy the borough's quiet, peaceful atmosphere, scenic rural setting, and opportunities for outdoor recreation along the river and surrounding areas. Millstone continues to balance its historic character with measured development, making it an attractive destination for those seeking a glimpse of small-town New Jersey life.
